Objective

The primary objective of Yukon Solitaire is to move all the cards from the tableau to the Foundations.

Setup

There are only two main play areas in Yukon Solitaire. The main space is the tableau, which is where all the cards are located at the start of the game. 

There are 7 columns, with the first one on the left holding only one card facing up. The rest of the columns have an increasing number of cards, some facing up and others facing down. 

The other playing area is called the Foundations. You need to place cards from Ace to King in their own piles in their suites. You must start with Ace and then move cards from the tableau in ascending order. 

The main difference between standard and Yukon Solitaire is that there’s no Stockpile. All the cards are placed in the tableau when the game begins.

Basic Rules

  • Moving tableau cards between columns: You can only move one card onto another if they are alternating colors in descending order. That means you can place a 4 of Hearts on a 5 of Spaces, but not the other way around.
  • Place tableau cards on Foundations: The only time you can move a tableau card to the Foundation is if it’s in ascending order for the correct suite. So a 4 of Hearts can be placed on a 3 of Hearts.
  • Moving stacks: If you’ve built a stack of descending cards in alternating colors, you can move them to another column. The condition is that the uppermost card is lower and alternate in color to the one you’re placing it on.
  • The empty King: Only Kings can move to empty columns. If you have a stack starting with a King at the top, you can move the entire stack.
  • From Foundation to Tableau: You’re allowed to move cards from the Foundation to the tableau if it lets you unblock columns, as long as you follow the other rules.
  • Unlocking face-down cards: As soon as you’ve moved the last face-up card in a column, you can reveal the next face-down card. This adds mystery to the game.

Strategies & Tips

Take Your Time Studying the Tableau: Before you get excited and start moving cards around, take a look at the tableau. See which ones are locked and if you see any opportunities coming your way. It’s a great way to plan your moves beforehand and prevent becoming blocked.
Make Way for the Kings: You’ll want to empty columns as quickly as possible. When those Kings appear, they will block the rest of the packs beneath them. Start at the shorter end and work your way to the longer ones if possible.
Move Aces to Foundation ASAP: Another major blockage on columns is the Ace. You can’t place any lower cards on them, which means they have nowhere to go except the Foundation. As soon as you open one, move it up and out of the way. You won’t have any further use for it.
Race to the Hidden Cards: There are valuable cards facing down in the columns. You won’t know which ones will help you until you get there. Once you have Kings and Aces out of your way, focus on reaching them as soon as possible. Also, you should be able to calculate how many Kings and Aces are hidden by pre-checking the tableau before you begin playing.
