Setup

There are three main areas of the classic Tri Peaks Solitaire game. Let’s summarize it quickly:

  • The Tableau: This is the main board where 28 of the 52 cards are placed. All of the cards except the bottom row are faced down, hiding their mysteries below, like the Pyramids of Giza.
  • The Stock: This pile contains the remaining 24 cards of the deck, face down so you can’t see what’s coming next.
  • The Waste: When you turn over a Stock card or match a Tableau card, they end up in the Waste pile. Some versions refer to this as the Foundation instead.

Gameplay

To win the game, you need to move all the cards from the Tableau to the Waste. This doesn’t mean you’ll always use cards from the Stock. As a matter of fact, you can still win with items in the Stockpile once you move all Tableau cards.

Please note that, if you can’t move a card from Tableau to Waste, you’re allowed to turn a Stock card. However, you can’t reset the Waste pile back to the Stock pile once it’s depleted. If you’ve used all the Stock cards and the Tableau isn’t empty, the game is over, and you lose.

Rules

The general rules of Solitaire Tri Peaks inform you what you can and can’t do. Here’s a quick overview:

  1. Proper Pairing: You can only move cards from the Tableau to the Waste if the card is higher or lower. It doesn’t matter what suite or color it is.
  2. Locked Kings: In the classic Tri Peaks Solitaire game, you can’t place Aces on Kings or Vice Versa. However, the “Turn the Corner” mode allows you to do so, so check which version you have active.
  3. Only Open Cards: You can only use open cards to play to the Waste. That means that locked or face-down cards aren’t available until you unlock them by moving cards above them to the Waste.
  4. No Sequences or Empties: Unlike other Solitaire games, you can’t build sequences or fill empty Tableau spaces. All you can do is move matching cards to the Waste pile.
  5. Stock pile doesn’t refresh: As mentioned, you can’t return cards from the Waste to the Stock. Once that pile is done, it’s done. So use them carefully.

Strategies

  • Tackle Each Row Diligently: Don’t try to clear each pyramid one at a time. You’re making the game more challenging than it needs to be. By opening as many cards in a row as possible, you’re creating more opportunities.
  • Unlock Hidden Faces: If you’re deciding which card to move to the Waste when there’s more than one option, see which one will open a hidden face. You’ll want to maximize these opportunities as much as possible to prevent being blocked at a later stage.
  • The Highs and Lows: that you can move cards to the Waste in an ascending or descending order. This is helpful for when you have many of the same cards on the board. In essence, you can play 2, 3, 2, 3, and 4, dancing from high to low and back again.
  • the Cards You’ve Played: One of the top strategies you can use to win Tri Peaks Solitaire is paying attention to which cards you discard to the Waste. As an example, removing all four 5s means you will be limited to 3s when you have a 4. It’s vital to keep this in mind to continue unlocking your pyramids.
  • Slow Down on the Stock: It’s best to focus on moving Tableau cards to the Waste instead of Stock cards where possible. If you have absolutely no other recourse, then it’s fine. , if that pile ends, the game is over, and you can’t continue. All the other cards are locked in the pyramids.
